Old Health Post Reviews

WORRIED OVER ELEVATED SGPT

Since I started writing for this site, the post which was most read and had the most number of comments was my story entitled “Worried Over Elevated SGPT“. When I wrote it in May 2008, I was just trying to relate my personal account on how I managed my problem.

But now, it seemed readers are still finding my old post on search engines when they try to look for solutions for their own SGPT problems. Many have dropped their queries while others just shared their experience. The thread is very long now, but the discussions were very interesting.

Let me just reiterate to the readers that the discussions and answers in the thread are not intended as and do not substitute for a professional medical advice. The information presented is just for patient education only and it is still recommended that the readers see their personal physician for further evaluation of their individual cases.

THE COLOSTOMY STORY

This post which I wrote in July 2008 still generates readers who are interested in Ostomies  or Stomas. It was an honor to get a very positive comment from the President-elect of the United Ostomy Associations of America, Ms. Kristin Knipp.

This post was also linked in different health sites like this one by the Student Nurse Journey.

Again allow me to thank everyone who drops by, especially those who took the time to leave comments. I truly appreciate this.

Hi .. I have gone through your post on July 2008 regarding Elevated SGPT, it is really very good.

Just to share with you, i am just 29 years old s/w professional. I had infected with some viral fever and hospitalized around last Nov 11 .. i fully recovered from it within 3/4 days and doc give me discharges.
After 15/20 days i am feeling certain pain in my whole body including nee, neck, backache, shoulders and also having swelling in all my joints .. and as day progresses it goes
to certain level that i could not able to move my self .. i had tried certain doctors but they are unable to diagnose this .. Then one Rhematologist diagnosed and tell me that i am suffering with sacroiliac arthritis (X-ray and CT Scan also gives same reported). during time he conducted my blood tests which includes complete blood count, SGPT, CRP..

Since then i am checking my blood once a month and found that my SGPT and CRP level is too high .. my SGPT level is around 65.. and CRP level is almost doubled as normal level mentioned.
Doctor suggested that i had to take medicine at least for 2/3 years to get to completely cured, they are not giving me some vitamins and supplementary medicines to increase my blood.. and calcium in my bones..
Though i am really afraid of this .. that some how it is affecting on my nature .. that since some days i am also observing that i have become a bit angry minded .. though i am not like that ..

do you have anythings to help me out from this.. though current medicine which i am getting now is suiting my body and my body is responding .. and now days i m having normal movements and can do my normal work as earlier days ..

    cheers..

Hi P. YOGESH, thanks for sharing your experience. Your recent elevation of SGPT level was probably due to the intake of medications for your condition. But I should say that the level is not in an alarming high and I am sure it can be reduced down to a normal level later, with diet and exercise. If you are responding well with your current treatment, I suggest you continue with the regimen and continue consulting with your doctor 🙂

    Hi nelson,

I recently had a blood test done on my liver and the reading SGPT/ ALT is 97 and my SGOT is 45.
My doctor was saying that it could be fatty liver.
I need to understand on this fatty liver and what can i do to reduce my SGPT to a normal range.

I have not been execrising for a while and taking in a lot of oily food and meat.
Will having a healthy diet helps?

    Many Thanks

Fatty liver is a condition where there is abnormal accumulation of triglyceride fat in the liver cells. It is a reversible condition and diet plays a very important role in lowering your SGPT level. Try to avoid oily foods and meat, and alcoholic beverages. Getting some exercise will help as well. Good luck.

Ok lang naman ang egg and kamote pag nagda diet kasi egg is a good source of protein and kamote is a good source of carbs. But you need to add something else to make up a balanced diet. Add fruits and vegetables too.

Hi. just want to say that what i read here is very helpful. It about my mom. Last week her SGPT level become slightly elevated – 57.4 from 24 last May. Her doctor said that its because of the medication she’s been taking. He gave my mom Legalon 140mg to be taken 1 x a day for a month. and to have her upper abdomen ultrasound. Just to be sure.
She has this recurrent UTI – the first was last may and the second one was just almost 2 weeks ago ( after a major kidney operation last year since she was diagnosed with chronic pyelonephritis with matching kidney stone )and was given nitrofurantoin and ciprofloxacin for the past 8 weeks by her urologist. in addition to that, she’s been taking Lipitor 40mg 1 x a day for the past months to lower her cholesterol and Gemfirozil for her triglycerides. Plus some medications for her hypertension and diabetes. :))
From what i read, these medications can increase her SGPT level. Now I understand why her doctors been monitoring her laboratory results religiously, although they’ve been so nice enough to explain certain things to us.
Her doctor reduced the dosage of Lipitor and reminded her about her diet. I pray that after a month- it will be normal again.

Indeed chronic use of certain medications can cause the rise in SGPT. These drugs include antihypertensives, anticholesterolemia and oral hypoglycemics. My prayers are with you for your mother.
