Between What is Rich and What is Poor

Two businessmen met in the street.  One looked so sad and almost on the verge of tears.  The other man said, “Hey, how come you look like the whole world caved in?”

The sad fellow said, “Let me tell you.  Three weeks ago, an uncle died and left me two hundred thousand pesos.”

“That’s not bad.” Said his businessman friend trying to console him.

“Hold on, I’m just getting started.  Two weeks ago, a cousin I never knew had an accident, died and he left me five hundred pesos tax free.”

“I’d like that. But I can’t understand why you’re not happy”

And the sad fellow said, “Last week my grandfather passed away.  I inherited almost two million pesos.”

“The how come you look so glum?”

And with sadness the businessman said, “Of course I’m sad. Look. This week – nothing. Nobody died!”

Some people will never be happy because all they ever wanted is more.

This is an old story but worth its weight in gold to serve as a reminder for life lessons learning.

**********************************

One day, the father of a very wealthy family took his son on a trip to the country with the express purpose of showing him how poor people live.

They spent a couple of days and nights on the farm of what would be considered a very poor family.

On their return from their trip, the father asked his son, “How was the trip?”

“It was great, Dad.

“Did you see how poor people live?” the father asked.

“Oh yeah,” said the son.

“So, tell me, what you learned from the trip?” asked the father.

The son answered:

“I saw that we have one dog and they had four. We have a pool that reaches to the middle of our garden and they have a creek that has no end. We have imported lanterns in our garden and they have the stars at night.

“Our patio reaches to the front yard and they have the whole horizon. We have a small piece of land to live on and they have fields that go beyond our sight.

“We have servants, who serve us, but they serve others. We buy our food, but they grow theirs.  We have walls around our property to protect us; they have friends to protect them.”

The boy’s father was speechless.

Then his son added, “Thanks Dad for showing me how poor we are.”

A Chinese proverb says: “He who is content can never be ruined.”

**********************************

Some people complain all the time.

  • “They’re not paying me enough…”
  • “The benefits here are lousy…”
  • “I never liked my job…”

But wait till a chilling message begins to creep through the corporate grapevine.

  • “There’s news that the company has been brought by another and there will be a massive layoff.”
  • “Many jobs will be cut and many positions will be declared redundant…”

Suddenly, the tune of the music changes drastically.

Discontent turns into fear.

Grumbling turns into prayers.

And why do we have to allow things like these to happen?

We never appreciate the value of something until that thing is taken away from us.

And why is this so? Because it is so hard for us to learn and understand contentment.

Without contentment, there will always be contention.

Here is the key. Shoot for the best. Excel in whatever field you are in. Dream big dreams but learn to enjoy life’s small pleasures along the way. And when we are faithful in what we do, skilled in the doing and excellent in the things done, the small pleasures turn into opportunities for bigger ones. Enjoy them all.

Paul in the New Testament says: “I have learned to be content in whatever condition I am in.” Somebody says: “To live content with small means, to seek elegance rather than luxury, and refinement rather than fashion; to be worthy, not respectable, and wealthy, not rich; to study hard, think quietly, talk gently, act frankly; to listen to the stars and birds, to babes and sages, with open heart; to bear all cheerfully, do all bravely, await occasion, hurry never; in a word, to let spiritual, unbidden and unconscious, grow up through the common. This is my symphony .

Habit and Character

A story goes like this…..

A frog was languidly sitting on the banks of a river. A scorpion soon came by and requested the frog to ferry him across the river. The frog then enquired how he is supposed to carry the scorpion ? The scorpion told that he will jump on to his back and then the frog can swim across the river. The frog thought for a moment and was not too happy with the idea. He asked the scorpion: “What if you sting me during the process ?”

The scorpion laughed and told that he is not made to do that because if he stings he knows that both will perish in the river. Quite convinced with scorpion’s words, the frog decided to ferry him across the river.

As they reached the middle of the river, the frog had a sharp pain and realized to the utter consternation that the scorpion has stung him. Puzzled and bemused by this behaviour, the frog asked the scorpion : “Why did you do it when you promised that you won’t ? The scorpion then painfully replied…I am sorry. I have no control over my character. It is my habit to strike whatever I see and to me you were just a target. I could not resist myself from stinging you..”

The frog then retorted..See now what you have done. Because of your inability to control your instincts, you have put my life also at peril. We are both going to perish now..saying this both the frog and the scorpion drowned in the river.

What do we learn from this story ? It is very difficult to change your attitude and character. It is your thought which becomes your deed and your deeds becomes your habit and your habits shapes your character. So always remember to gravitate towards your possible thoughts and feelings for it will greatly help in shaping your character.

(William A. Borst)

**********************************

Do you know why it is so difficult to change your habit ?

If you remove H..” abit” remains

If you remove A..”bit” remains

If you remover B..even then “it” remains

So we need to be very careful in cultivating a habit because it soon becomes a part of you and your character

********************

Sow a thought, and you reap an act;

Sow an act, and you reap a habit;

Sow a habit, and you reap a character;

Sow a character, and you reap a destiny

Your character is essentially the sum of your…HABITS.

Weekly Photo Challenge: FLOWERS

Whew! It’s been a while since I really wrote something. If you would notice, my posts for the last two months were merely reposts for “Inspirational Sundays”. This is because the last two months have been a busy time for me, but I would not want to miss a week not posting anything. That’s the reason why “Inspirational Sundays” was born.

My schedules are slowly getting better, so I guess I will be able to write something meaty again in the next few days. Here goes another comeback – the “Weekly Photo Challenge” whose themes are provided weekly by WordPress. The theme is released on Fridays, but to allow me to dig in to my files, the posts will be out on Saturdays here at Digital Catharsis. Clicking the “photographer image” on your left-hand side will bring you to the previous weekly photo challenge posts.

This week’s theme is “FLOWERS”.

These pictures were taken last January during spring time here in Al Ain. This was at Al Ain Paradise, and this garden was included in this year’s Guinness Book of World Records for holding the largest display of hanging flowers in the world. I have a previous post about this HERE.

Have a nice weekend, everyone!

Sculptor’s Attitude

***********************************

I woke up early today, excited over all I get to do before the clock strikes midnight. I have responsibilities to fulfill today. I am important. My job is to choose what kind of day I am going to have.

Today I can complain because the weather is rainy or I can be thankful that the grass is getting watered for free.

Today I can feel sad that I don’t have more money or I can be glad that my finances encourage me to plan my purchases wisely and guide me away from waste.

Today I can grumble about my health or I can rejoice that I am alive.

Today I can lament over all that my parents didn’t give me when I was growing up or I can feel grateful that they allowed me to be born.

Today I can cry because roses have thorns or I can celebrate that thorns have roses.

Today I can mourn my lack of friend or I can excitedly embark upon a quest to discover new relationships.

Today I can whine because I have to go to work or I can shout for joy because I have a job to do.

Today I can complain because I have to go to school or eagerly open my mind and fill it with rich new tidbits of knowledge.

Today I can murmur dejectedly because I have to do housework or I can feel honored because the Lord has provide shelter for my mind, body and soul.

Today stretches ahead of me, waiting to be shaped. And here I am, the sculptor who gets to do the shaping. What today will be like is up to me. I get to choose what kind of day I will have!

Have a GREAT DAY…… God bless!
