Day 1 at Yas Island: ARRIVING AT YAS

The people who came from different hospitals around Abu Dhabi met at Khalifa A Clinic, where buses were waiting to take us to Yas Island. We got into the island around lunch time and were assisted to check in at Radisson Blu Hotel, the same hotel where we checked in last year. It is located just across the Formula One race track. We had our lunch at Asymetri restaurant located at the ground floor.

In the evening, we were picked up at the hotel lobby so we could check out the newly-built field tent hospital. It is now located much nearer to the race track, as compared to where it was set up last year.

The Field Tent Hospital is a 180-bedded facility equipped with an ER, hospital wards, Pharmacy, Laboratory, even Operating Rooms and ICUs. I saw the improvement in the construction of the tents, with comfort rooms stategically located inside the tents. Ah, what money can do! I wondered if only our government in the Philippines would be able to set up tent hospitals during disasters, more lives coud have been saved.

We later went back to the hotel to have our dinner – buffet at Asymetri. I later found out that I will be on day shifts for the rest of the week. It was a disappointment though because I was expecting to be on night shifts like last year. I love night shifts coz I could go around the island during the day. But, who am I to complain? So I decided to retire early to bed despite my friends’ offer to stay at the poolside to have some drinks.

Day 1 at Yas Island: UNPACKED AND PACKED

06 November 2010-  I just unpacked the other day after coming back from my family’s holidays to the Philippines, and here I am packed again today for another trip. This is for my scheduled work as a paramedic for the Formula One Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The event is being hosted for the second time by Abu Dhabi at Yas Island on 14 November.

This is also my second year to be part of this international event. My last year’s experience was quite good so I did not hesitate when I was offered to join again. Who wouldn’t want a job where you can mix work and pleasure? You work as a nurse, and you get to stay in a 4-star hotel for free, with buffet meals. And you also get to watch the Formula One races, when others just dream of being there because of the expensive ticket prices.

Aside from these benefits, I also feel that it is such an honor to be part of this international event, participated by chosen doctors and nurses from different hospitals in Abu Dhabi.

It seems that this will be an extension of my vacation, as I have not started working yet in my hospital unit, since I came back from my holidays. I am just glad to be away from my usual busy hospital work.

No one person can ever experience all that life has to offer. It is only through sharing - experiences, feelings, insights - that we can hope to grow beyond our own meager lifetime.
